The renowned charity institution that I mentioned in the earlier post “Can Shortsightedness Be Cured By William Bates Method?” is “The School for Perfect Eyesight, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, India.” If you are interested in trying yourself, here are the details like contact address, location, map, website, instructions etc.
When contacted by email, they sent me the following set of instructions (which I edited a bit to include the missed salient points) that I am sharing here for the benefit of all those who aspire to undergo the training program:
Short Intro:
The School for Perfect Eyesight at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, is a ray of hope to those suffering from visual defects. The patients have to undergo treatment for a week and follow it up through simple exercises taught in the School. Although the treatment is free, one may contribute according to one’s own will.
Misuse of the eyes while reading, sewing, watching films has been the cause of the strain in the eyes and headaches. While glasses help to correct eye defects to some extent and offer relief from headaches and watering of eyes, they do not check deterioration. The power of glasses continues to increase.
The beneficiaries are in the age group 7 to 40. Strain seems to be the chief cause for refractive errors. The School intends to popularize relaxation as an important and vital part of preventing visual defects. The patient has to come to the school with the glasses and the doctor’s prescription for the glasses and a lawn tennis ball, prepared for one week’s stay. For children below 10 years, at least one of the parents should accompany; preferably mother. One has to arrange one’s own accommodation. He/she may directly contact the guest houses or hotels in the list mentioned below for accommodation.
Holidays:
MONDAY IS A WEEKLY HOLIDAY. Any other government holidays and Ashram Darshan days are also holidays.
Duration of the Course:
Outstationed patients have to take up a training of 14 sessions in 7 working days at the rate of 2 sessions a day, one in the morning and the other in the evening. Local residents have only one session a day, spanning 14 working days.
How to Get an Appointment:
Please take an appointment for the eye exercises by e-mail well in advance. PLEASE NOTE THAT APRIL, MAY, JUNE, END OF SEPTEMBER, AND LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER ARE ONLY FOR CHILDREN.

The room rents could cost you anywhere from $1 to $20 per head a day.
Food:
Hotels cater almost all types of foods at cheap to moderate prices.
How to Reach Pondicherry:
Pondicherry is well connected by rail and road. The nearest international airport is at Chennai, around 160 kms away. From the airport, you can get a cab or public transport modes like bus or train to reach there.

Languages Spoken in Pondicherry:
Tamil, English, French, Hindi. (Telugu is spoken in the Telugu district of Yanam and Malayalam in the Malayalam district of Mahe, which are far away from the main state, hence not useful in the main town.) The trainers at the School of Perfect Eyesight speak Oriya also, and you can converse with them in Hindi too.
Places of Interest in and Around Pondicherry:
Matrimandir at Auroville
There are a lot places to visit in and around Pondicherry. Most of the tourist spots in Pondicherry are within a couple of kilometers and can easily be covered with the help of a bicycle. Find time to visit Auroville, a universal city in the making, endorsed by The Government of India as well as the UNESCO. It means the City of Dawn, an experimental township where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities.
So if anyone at your home is having vision problems, you can plan the visit as medical tourism to a cheap, affordable destination!
Best Season to Visit Pondicherry:
The best time to visit Pondicherry is from July until February. March, April, May, and June are the hottest months. In these months, humidity levels remain high with daytime temperatures around 40°C. For The School of Perfect Eyesight, April, May, and June are the busiest with children having their summer holidays. Adults are not allowed in these months.
Some Additional Information:
The official name of Pondicherry is Puducherry since 2006. Both the names indicate one and the same region.

1.) I stayed in New Guest House. It was good. (Note that it was back in 2012).
2.) For two days, we ate at Aurobindo Ashram Canteen. It was good, and the rates were subsidized. To eat at the Ashram Canteen, request for coupons at the guest house you stay.
3.) Rest of the days we ate in outside hotels and at the canteen in the guest house.

I just came back from the hospital where my daughter has been diagnosed with a power of -2, -1 and has cylindrical power too. Was too shocked and am on internet trying to find alternative solutions. Even after 3 hours I’m finding it difficult to believe.

Thank you for providing the details of this school. I have been trying to check on solutions for myopia progression in children for long and your information was very helpful. I took my 8 years old son there and his power reduced by 0.5 and 0.25 and mine by 0.75. I am continuing the exercise at home since then once a day for him. Also have you explored the other options like using low power glasses when doing near work like reading, writing, computer? The reason is our eyes can see clearly with less power (1.5 to 2 degrees less) and if we use the same power we are straining our eyes. I am using 2 pairs currently for my son but not sure how much that helps. If you have done any research or plan to, let know your thoughts.

Yes, I tried less power glasses for a few months after returning back from the School but the power of eyes didn’t come down. The problem with making a child do any exercise is like taking a horse to water, you can’t make it drink. The desire has to come from within. However, still I am looking out for possible solutions. Will let you know if I come across one.

I am a computer engineer, aged 22, living in Chennai. I have spherical power of -0.5 and cylindrical power of -1.0 (180*) in both my eyes. I am planning to go to Pondicherry for practicing the Bate’s method. Lot of my friends and relatives had benefits out of this. But my doubt is whether astigmatism/cylindrical power be cured by this method? I read the article about your son. Even in his test reports after the program, there seems to be no improvement in the cylindrical power. It was 0.5 before and after the test. After two months into exercising, Rahul was unable to continue the exercises amid his school chores. Yes, his spherical power improved while doing the exercises but the cylindrical power was stagnant. I think you have a minor error that would cause you discomfort only when you are at the back benches in a class. Otherwise, it wouldn’t affect you so much in your routine daily life. I too have the same power now at 43 years of age but I have discarded the glasses as the power is not all a cause of worry for me. Anyway, it is good to try eye exercise as taught in the school. If I regularly practice, will it help me to reduce myopia at least by 1 for both eyes? I know you are beneficiary, so please guide me.
We had relief to the tune of 1 point within a week of regular practice; so I hope it should be the case with you too if you are dedicated and sincere. After all, you are not going to lose anything as no medicine/surgery is involved, and it is free. Only you are spending time in trying to relax your eye muscles. So why not try and adjudge yourself? My daughter was 6.8 yrs old when we found she has astigmatism ( cylin power) of -4.5 in her right eye & spherical power +1. Left eye has cylin power -0.5. I worried a lot when doctor said there may be a chance of having Keratoconus. We went to School for perfect eyesight in PONDICHERRY this July . Within 3 months my daughter’s eyesight improved to right eye spherical nil cylindrical 4. left eye perfectly clear after doing eye exercise for 15 min everyday. I saw many kids coming for eye exercise. So please give a try.

When we came back and she started doung practice at home by partly using glasses at school and not using glasses rest of the time. She is complaining head ache regularly. Did you change the glasses to the new eye power? If not, you should. The headache might be because of the difficulty to adjust to the old power of the glass.
In my case, I got it changed as and when the power got reduced for my son.

I had mentioned in the review of the School for Perfect Eyesight that I stayed in the New Guest House run by Aurobindo Ashram. Two adults and a kid can comfortably stay in a double bedded room. I found it cheap and best at that time. I had to pay only hundred rupees or so for a day’s stay. You should send them a demand draft in advance for confirmed booking. Better you inquire with them about the current rates and further details. All the guest houses run by Ashram should be far cheap and best compared with other private accommodation facilities. However, I didn’t compare it with other lodges or guest houses. Moreover, Ashram guest houses would allow you to stay only if you are their disciple or if you mention that you have come for the class at School for Perfect Eyesight. Similarly food provided by Ashram is very cheap. On alternate days or so, you may request Ashram’s food token with the manager of the New Guest House, and he will be kind enough to provide you that too. You should experience that dining and discipline at the Ashram at least one day during your stay.

1 We have to do this exercises only 2 times a day?
2 Can we wear glasses in our entire day? and if we can, then which type of glasses, exact prescription or slightly under prescribed glasses ? As my daily routine will be restricted if i don’t wear glasses for whole day as I m doing job.
3 How rapidly the eye No. reduces as you mentioned that your son have reduced 1 diopter in the week. So how fast was progress after you left the School and kept doing exercise regularly at home.
It is great that you are responding to queries from numerous people. As millions of people are suffering with various eye ailments and majority of them are unable to visit pondicherry personally, may I request you that the exercises your son practised be in a video format along with a brief explanation. If the video is available online, it comes handy and makes lot of difference compared with verbal explanation for many of eye patients. Even my daughter of 15 years old suffering with eye problems, unable visit pondycherry. Hence the request.
I am helpless for the time being. Unfortunately my son has stopped doing the exercises more than 3 years ago and couple of instruments that we did construct for doing the exercises have been done away with. To be frank, we have even forgotten the exercises learned, and may be we have to refer my blog post to brush up. Sorry for not being able to help you.

My 11 year old daughter has -7.75 in both eyes. My friends are suggesting me to go to ashram. For me even if the power is stable after the treatment is fine. But making her do the exercise everyday may be difficult. I would like to know whether this treatment will be fruitful even if she doesn’t do the exercise after couple of months. I think for a couple of months she will be interested and then it may become a struggle for me to make her do. The reason I have tried some other alternate treatment and it didn’t work out for her.

I stayed in New Guest House which is a 1-km walk on seashore. The rooms too were neat and clean. It also had a canteen. New Guest House is at the southern end of Goubert Avenue and the School at northern end. So, you can spend evening times happily on the seashore.
Furthermore, ask the guest house manager for a day’s meals coupon at Aurobindo Ashram.

It went good, actually the appointment will be 6 days and Monday is holiday, so we took only for 5 days because of my dependencies. So plan accordingly like in between Tuesday to Sunday so that you don’t need to stay back an extra day.
My Kid did the exercises moderately so he got moderate results but if you do them perfectly you will notice better results.

I am 36 and in software. I have Myopic with almost -3 in both eyes and wear specs for about 17 years. My Only question is there someone who is completely got rid of glasses after undergoing the training(assuming they practiced it regularly however long it may be)?. If so, what was their original Myopic before attending classes? How long they trained to completely got rid of the glasses?. Apologies if you do not know all these details, but just curious to know if you know someone who is benefited that way?. It will definitely help me attend it for sure.

We are a family ,where glasses have being around for 3 generations . My son is 13 yrs and he has -3 prescription. It is increasing very rapidly so we are really stressed and he is uncomfortable too. We are above 40 as Parents , the question here is can we attend the eye training all of us , I know it will effect him the most , but if we also try and learn it may be it will reduce our prescription.

I, too, have got benefits out of such relatively less known alternate modes of treatment, which I love sharing with people.
Here, I have a query for you.
My son is only 3 years and 9 months of age and recently he has been diagnosed with some kind of amblyopia (lazy eye) with cylendrical glasses powers of -3.0 D in both the eyes. Though the doctor has called us for a re-assessment after 01 month.
Somewhere in your blog, I have read that the minimum age to go for the sessions in the school is 7 years.
Kindly confirm, if I am right about the minimum age criteria!
Further, if the capping of 7 years as a the minimum age is right, I would request you to suggest the options which I may currently opt for, in this regard. (This kind of request comes only for the reason that you have attended the sessions and have been associated with the subject for long.)
In case, options are not available, can you please advise some kind of exercises which can be started for my son.

I think your son had treatment in 2013. After so many years now how is he?

Two years back I took my son to Thrissur for traditional eye treatment.
It is also good. Since he has -4.25 he had to take 48 days treatment for three years.
And as we put up in Dubai I could go only for 28 days but till now his power level is maintained.
Last year he was in grade 10 so we didnt took the treatment. But Vaidhyasheela says for high power 48 days must to reduce the level.
Just sharing my experience.
I find Aurobindo eye school interesting with fast cure. Like fast food…

It’s really nice to hear from you. Even I was amazed when heard about the treatment. But since we were there for 28 days I saw so many people eye power corrected. Not only Myopia, they cure so many eye problems and migraine too. It’s a daily treatment . Daily they fill eyes with some medicated ghee and weekly twice they apply some herbal paste ( secret tradition) . for high power at least three years we have to go for48days treatment. Since now my son going higher classes it’s really hard to stay there for long period. But it’s good.
But now I feel what you say is even more easy and adaptable.

Eye exercise works. When i was 39 years old , my no reduced by -0.75 both eyes. Now I am 50, i have reading number, I try to reduce, but no doesnt reduce but prevents deterioration.

By the way, they are not giving any treatment. They are just advising some eye exercises.

I think they have kept the upper age limit because the eye muscles become rigid and lose their plasticity beyond a certain age.

My daughter aged 6.9 yrs had severe astigmatism in 2014. -4.5 in right eye only. We went there for a week and stayed in Park Guest house. After 6 months her Cylindrical power reduced to -4. Till May 2015 her vision remains same bcoz of these exercise. Past 1 yr she is doing other eye exercise but her power gone up to 4.5 again. So plz follow what they teach u. It gives good result but slowly.
Also my daughter’s vision comes down to 6/12 from 6/24. Also her blurriness got reduced bcoz of exercise.

I am from Chennai taken my Daughter (20 yrs) to School of Perfect Eye sight for a weeks training/ exercise( 5th to 10th Aug) for improving her vision power. It is remarkable to see the power has reduced by 0.5 in a matter of 6 days and had asked to continue the exercise regularly till further reduction.
Going and staying at Pondy for about a week is a big task for everyone, But after seeing the fruitfulness , It is nothing.

Sir we understand that one private institution is giving the eye excerise in coimbatore on behalf of aravindar ashram kindly confirm whether we can use.
The School at Pondicherry is a part of Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The classes conducted, the lessons imparted, and the service provided are FREE. It is a free, humanitarian, charity mission that anyone, irrespective of the financial status or nationality, could avail of. Even accommodation at the Ashram’s Guest Houses to attend the School and food at the Ashram are provided at subsidized rates. The School hasn’t got any branch anywhere.
Elsewhere, it is conducted as a business, for a fee, for a profit motive, but purported to be branches of the School.
So that’s the difference. Now it’s up to you to make due diligence.

Yes, if you live near by. In lean seasons you can walk in without any appointment. Peak season: School holidays in summer, winter, pooja etc. Lean season: Rest of the days.

Hi, I have got an appointment for my 8 year old son on April 24th and they asked to confirm on 22nd. My son’s eye power -1.75.
Could you please help me on few clarification?
1. Is it mandatory to attend this session on all 7 days?
2. I am planning to go with my wife and younger son, can I get accommodation for them as well? If not, will they allow us to stay near by hotels?
3. How much could be the decent chargers for the accommodation that they are providing?
4. I heard they are conducting 2 sessions in a day. What could be the duration of each sessions.

3.) Very cheap. 100 rupees or so per day for 2 adults and 1 child if my memory is right, as it was 6 years back, where I stayed in New Guest House. Contact them over phone. Find the details here. You have to pay them in advance to get the booking confirmed.
4.) 1 to 2 hours for each session depending up on the ease at which the child completes the exercises.

I have received an appointment confirmation and the date they mentioned on 13th April (Friday). 14th April (Tamil New Year Holiday) & 16th April (Monday – Their Weekly Holiday). Since we have to be there for 7 days, we have to stay till 21st April (Almost 9 days).
The doubt here is, should we need to go on the appointment date (on 13th April) or I can go there on 15th April (Sunday)? so that we can be there from Sunday to Sunday to cover 7 classes. Please confirm.

The one in Pondicherry is run on non-profit motive and is purely charity. Elsewhere it is profit motive. If you are short of time and want to save travel, it is your choice.

From my experience, I think your son’s power can be reduced to nil and yours by 1 or 2 diopters. Contact the School and try your luck.

My daughter’s name is Nandhini. She is 13 years old. last 10 Year’s back she started rubbing her eyes and short sight problem now and then. when asked she told irritation inside the eyes and later she told unable to see the words in the text & Numeric book.

My friend is going to join the school… other than working hours what are the things we can do in the school??? And can i visit the student other than his/her working hours???
The School will guide to do the exercises for about an hour, both in the morning and in the evening, and the classes dismissed after that. Nothing else you can do at the School after that. Why do you want to visit your friend in that one hour?
