The School for Perfect Eyesight in Pondicherry – A Review

Preface

In my quest to know whether shortsightedness can be cured by Bates method, I scoured the Internet and got the contact details of The School For Perfect Eyesight in Pondicherry, a charity institution run by Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which is giving free training on Bates method for those who are in need. I got an appointment for my son, Rahul, for one week, and arranged accommodation in one of the Ashram’s guest houses.

If you too are interested, I have written about the details on how to reach Pondicherry, how to arrange the accommodation for a week’s stay, address of The School for Perfect Eyesight, contact number, email and all other associated details for making it a pleasant stay in my last post here. You can head to that page if you don’t want to read this full page but are curious to make arrangements, as you might have heard about the goodies of the school elsewhere.

It is a 500-km drive from my place, Coimbatore, to Pondicherry. We (myself, wife, and Rahul) drove to Pondicherry a day before and reached the New Guest House by evening where we had been given accommodation on prior appointment. Since the Ashram guest houses also are run on a non-profit, service motive, the accommodation is far cheap and good compared to other hotels around. Food is also provided at the Ashram at a very much subsidized rate for which you can get coupons at the Ashram guest houses if you ask for. You can also have food from the restaurants outside the Ashram as you wish.

Brief History About the School for Perfect Eyesight:

The School for Perfect Eyesight at Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry was established decades ago, on May 5, 1968, at the efforts of an ophthalmologist, Late Dr. Raghubir Sharan Agarwal, a staunch disciple of the renowned spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo.

Dr.R.S.Agarwal or Doctor Raghubir Sharan Agarwal, Founder, School For Perfect Eyesight, Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry

Dr. R. S. Agarwal laid his life towards the upliftment of human misery through the practices of allopathic medicine. But later while in pursuit of disambiguation, he got deep into the philosophies of naturopathy. Hence he had to abandon the concept of allopathic cures that he acquired through his studies as a doctor. This moved him close to yoga and the principles laid down by Dr. William Horatio Bates. Doctor R. S. Agarwal is also the author of a couple of books. The pertinent among them on vision improvement are Mind and Vision and Yoga of Perfect Sight. (Find paperbacks of Mind and Vision and Yoga of Perfect Sight.)

His son, Dr. Jaiveer Agarwal, later founded the renowned Dr. Agarwal’s Group of Eye Hospitals and is currently run by his successors.

Timing and Duration of the Classes:

Outstation patients have to take up the training of 14 sessions in 7 working days at the rate of 2 sessions a day of approximately 60 minutes each, starting at 8 in the morning and the second one at 3 in the evening. Monday is a weekly holiday. (Check working hours and where to arrange accommodation here.) Localites have only a session a day of approximately 60 minutes each, spanning 14 working days.

Treatment Practices Advised:

Upon arrival, Ms. Santosh received us at the reception. After going through Rahul’s history and the doctor’s prescription, he was evaluated for the treatment/training that he needs to undergo. Rahul struggled to read the last 2-3 lines on the Snellen chart with naked eyes at a distance of 1-1/2 to 2 feet.

He was advised to take up sun treatment; palming; acupressure and massage around the eyes, fingers, and toes; swaying sideways behind vertical bars; game of ball; game of cards; distant chart reading; and applying vapor and cold packs around the eyes along with the following set of instructions:

  • Do all the exercises twice daily during the training period.
  • Keep your timings for exercises during the training sessions.
  • At least one of the parents should accompany children below 10 years.
  • Eat green leafy vegetables, sprouts, milk, and orange-colored fruits.
  • Non-vegetarians can take fish or eggs once a week.
  • The improvement will depend on many factors including the extent of damage already caused, the regularity in doing exercises, and following the instructions given from time to time.
  • Avoid watching TV and video, avoid playing video games and cell phone games and avoid using computers, laptops, and tablet PCs during the training period.

While preparing the curriculum, the School has capsulated all the goodies of the William Bates method, yoga, acupuncture, and Dr. Agarwal’s own methods that he researched, developed and tried when practicing as an eye specialist. Depending upon the patient’s needs, only the capsules vary! However, it is pertinent to note at this point that none of the current instructors at the School have no medical or optometric credentials but are just Bates’ practitioners. They are just propagating the methods of Late Dr. R. S. Agarwal. Find below the exercises in detail that Rahul underwent.

Eyedrops

First of all, apply a drop of saline water, rosewater, or honey to each eye depending upon the patient. This provides a soothing effect and/or provides an antibacterial effect depending upon the drop that has been applied. Rahul had saline water drops. He tolerated the saline eyedrops well and didn’t exhibit any repugnance.

Sun Treatment

Sun treatment for vision improvement in shortsightedness

Sun treatment is an important exercise, and the School is recommending everybody to practice it. The right way to do this exercise is to sit or stand facing the sun with the eyes closed allowing the sun to shine directly on the closed eyelids and then swing the body gently from side to side like a pendulum for two to five minutes. Morning and evening are the best times for sun treatment. (This treatment becomes more effective and gives better results if you apply a drop of honey to each eye before sun treatment. It also relieves strain and pain more quickly.)

Acupressure and Massage Around Eyes, Fingers, and Toes

To stimulate the acupoints around the eyes and nerve endings around fingers and toes, apply gentle pressure with the fingers around the eyes up to the ears and around the fingers and toes. This produces a massage effect and refreshes the muscles and nerves around the eyes. It is easy to do and anybody can do it to refresh themselves and to increase the blood flow.

Palming

Palming is another most important exercise that the School recommends that all should practice for getting relief from eye pain and fatigue. You do it by covering the closed eyes with the palms of the hands and the fingers crossed upon the forehead so that no light passes through. (Take care to avoid pressure either on the eyes or on the nose.) This produces total darkness, a perfect black, in the covered eyes giving rest to the eyes. And you have to do this for about 5 to 15 minutes. The School advises children to do palming regularly so that they can read a lot and do their studies better. If you do this often, it is one of the best methods for relieving strain and discomfort and gives relaxation.

Swaying Behind Vertical Bars

Swinging and swaying behind vertical bars with vision focused on a distant object

It was Dr. Agarwal’s observation that myopic patients improve their sight and cure more quickly by standing and swaying near a window, looking off in the distance at large objects or the background behind the bars. The patient stands behind the vertical bars (window) with the feet 12 inches apart and sways gently from side to side like a pendulum looking beyond through the bars focusing on a distant object, and blinking at each end of the swing. This exercise trains the eyes to focus on distant as well as near objects at the same time. In doing this swing, the nearer objects appear to be moving in the opposite direction while the farther objects appear to move in the same direction. You have to do this for five to ten minutes.

Game of Ball

The game of ball aims at improving the accommodation capacity of the eyes and encourages to develop the blinking habit. You do it either by throwing the ball from one hand to the other or by bouncing the ball on the floor from one hand and catching the ball on the other hand; the former being “inverted U” type and the latter being “V” type. One should follow the ball’s movements and blink after each catch. You have to do this for ten minutes. If a child likes to play for a longer period, allow it to do so. After practicing for several days, the vision improves, giving full relaxation. Note that all can practice this exercise.

Game of Playing Cards

Game of cards helps the eyes focusing and distinguishing minute details

This exercise done with playing cards is again about training your eyes to blink frequently apart from equipping the eyes to compare and match identical objects and colors in dim light. Each card from the pack is compared against each card spread on the table in three rows and six columns while taking care to blink after comparing every card. The trip stops once you match a card or pass and you start again with the next card from the pack. Though it seems quite easy, it needs time and patience. It helps the eyes focus and distinguish minute details on two different objects at the same time. Generally, this exercise is for patients with higher diopters of shortsightedness.

Distant Snellen Test Card Reading

It is Dr. Bates’ observation that daily reading of the Snellen test card proved to be an effective method to prevent and cure errors of refraction and other eye troubles. Hence every home should have a Snellen test card hung on the wall in good light. Every member of the family or household should read the card every day, 15 to 20 feet away from the card depending upon one’s comfort level. A 5-minute practice is enough to deliver good results.

It is in this exercise where the memory becomes a help to the eyes. You will have two identical Snellen cards. Hang one card on the wall at a comfortable distance and hold the other one in your hands. Start reading the distant Snellen chart hung on the wall and blink after reading each alphabet. While reading downwards, when an alphabet becomes invisible, you look at the chart in the hand and then keep the eyes closed for half a minute. Then with gentle blinking, you look at the distant chart and try to make out the letter without straining or squinting. After some time, with the help of the memory, you will be able to visualize the letter and the distant objects, which you were previously unable to see.

Applying Vapor to Eyelids

To apply vapor to your eyelids, heat a bowl of water to form steam. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. As you do in the facial sauna, lean over the bowl. Blink in the rising vapor for a minute or two. The moist heat emitted from the facial sauna causes the blood vessels to dilate. It increases blood flow to the facial vessels. Thus it produces a rejuvenating effect.

Applying Cold Pack Over the Eyes

A cold pack placed on the eye gives a soothing effect and helps relieve tired eyes. Take two clean cotton swabs or handkerchiefs, dip them in ordinary cold water, and place them over the closed eyes. Leave them like that for ten minutes and enjoy the chillness. (Those suffering from sinus troubles should avoid taking the cold pack.)

List of Other Activities and Exercises

The other activities and exercises that are there on the School’s curriculum but Rahul didn’t have to do include washing of eyes, reading fine print in candlelight, practice on fundamentals, practice on C chart, auto-focusing/white spaces, candle concentration, practice on Pot-Hook card, spiral/diamond, occulo vibrator, practice on dial chart, circular reading/dot, practice on Om chart, eye movements, kaleidoscope, hi-square/owl eyes/cat ex., beads string/v. window, binoscope, color plates, UB reading, pumping, and cam stimulator. You can find most of these in detail in Dr. Agarwal’s book, Mind and Vision.

Results:

One of the most important aspects The School For Perfect Eyesight trains anybody enrolled is to develop the habit of blinking frequently. We are forgetting to do this in this age of television, mobile phones, and computer. Relaxation techniques; avoiding strain to the eyes; training the oblique muscles of the eye, the muscles of accommodation that are concerned with myopia, to work smoothly while looking at all directions; and to stay healthy with a healthy diet are the other skills and health tips given for myopic patients.

The results are very much encouraging for Rahul (age 6 years 10 months) if you compare his previous short-sight scores. See the chart below for his test score after undergoing the training session for a week.

Right Eye

Left Eye

SPH CYL AXIS V/A SPH CYL AXIS V/A
DV -9.5 -0.50     -7.75 -0.50
NV

He has a drop of 1.5 diopters in his right eye to -9.5 and a drop of 0.75 diopters in his left eye to -7.75 diopters at the end of the training period of 14 sessions. My brother (age 38) also has a drop of 1 diopter in each eye. We expect further improvements to be slow and steady, but only with dedicated practice at home. After all, you cannot expect a sudden cure with alternative medicine. At the least, I hope to halt the progression of myopia until Rahul grows up to an adult. By that time new surgical techniques may become available to correct refractive errors beyond -10 diopters. In the meantime, I will update you with significant improvements, if any.

To conclude, the training turned out to be successful, and Rahul completed the training at ease. He was discharged with the advice to follow up in six months. Whereas the poster at the School reminded: “After undergoing training session at the School, all the exercises if done daily should help you keep the eyes healthy and bright. The End (of eye problems).” “Finally, it is faith that cures.

After reading School For Perfect Eyesight reviews, you too will have an urge to practice the exercises; however, you may find it impossible to drop at the School personally. And hence you would like to obtain information either from the Internet or through correspondence. However, the School doesn’t advocate correspondence treatment as the results are uncertain. Moreover, there is always the possibility that the patient will not practice correctly the things which s/he is taught. After all, the training program is completely free; it is only a matter of finding the time. Since it involves your precious eyes, it is best in your interests to find time to visit The School for Perfect Eyesight.

(Note: School For Perfect Eyesight at Aurobindo Ashram and Aravind Eye Hospitals are in no way connected. They are two entirely different entities, except that the promoter of Aravind Eye Hospitals, Dr. G. Venkataswamy, is a staunch follower of Sri Aurobindo, hence the hospitals named after him.)

PS: This is NOT a sponsored review or anything of that sort. I have been a beneficiary for my son, Rahul. I was in a dilemma without having a true insight earlier; hence I thought it would be appropriate to guide anyone in need with a true review of the exercises taught and the outcome, and hence this elaborate post.

If you want to get an appointment at The School for Perfect Eyesight, Pondicherry, do not try to contact me. I may not be able to help you as I am in no way connected to the School. Instead, find the contact phone number, address, email ID, details about how to get an appointment, working hours, holidays, age requirements, certificates needed, where to stay during the treatment and all other details here.

Wish you good luck.

  1. Great results. Were all the exercises done without wearing glasses? Moreover, what is the axial length and visual acuity of Rahul (both eyes) with new prescription?
Do you know the Rahul’s axial lengths before you went to School for Perfect EyeSight?
1.5 decrease in myopia should result in 0.5-1mm decrease in axial length.

    • 1.) Yes, the exercises were done without glasses. We joined the class on April 17th. Since that date, I encouraged him to be without glasses throughout the summer vacation, and he tolerated well without glasses until he returned to school on June 1. I made him glasses for the aforementioned eye power when returning back to school after summer vacation.
2.) Yes, I know the axial length before going to School For Perfect Eyesight. I mentioned it in my earlier post, “Can myopia be cured by Bates method?” on April 16.
3.) I haven’t measured the current axial length. The ophthalmologists are skeptic and very much reluctant to cooperate, that I have to argue with them a lot. I got the results that I have mentioned above in a computerized eye test with an optometrist as well as with the test at the School For Perfect Eyesight. Neither of them did give a reading on visual acuity. When the ophthalmologists tested without dilating the eye, they too got the above readings. However, they insisted on testing the eyes after dilation. Even when tested after dilating the eyes, there was 0.5 reduction in power and the doctors informed a visual acuity of 6/9 in both eyes. Thanks for the information that the axial length might have decreased by 0.5 to 1 mm. That is a sweet news. You made my day.

I decided to stick to the readings of computerized eye testing, made the glasses accordingly, and am proceeding with making him do the eye exercises regularly until the followup visit to School For Perfect Eyesight after six months.

plz give me suggestions so that i will grab this oppurtunity thanking you sir

    • I think you could give a try. The only obstacle that I see is the time constraints for you as an IIT student to do the studies as well as the exercises. Anyway, have a visit to the School and get yourself reviewed by them and see what they have for you.

  3. Hi Raj,
I am planning to give a try for my daughter who’s point are -125. will there be a significant improvement? do we need to do the exercises twice daily?
We are staying the flat system and hardly there will be a direct sun to our flat.
    pls do reply.

    • Be much specific when you raise a question on a public forum, don’t write some silly numbers. The power can in no way be -125 diopters; there is no such thing. It should be either -12.5 or -1.25 or at the least -0.125. Refer the records for a dot in between the numbers and return back.

  4. Hello Raj!

I’m glad to see your son doing well!

I’m on my way to Pondy right now as I’ve got dreams of becoming a pilot and even though my correction (-4.5, -5) is within limits for a medical certificate I might find it hard to land a job. (Not considering no pilots have jobs any way :D )

I have ruled out LASIK and this is the only option I have left. Although since my eyesight is right on the limits of what is allowed (-5), I am worried about the risk of worsening my eyesight even further with these alternative therapies.

As I said earlier I’m on my way there now but I’d like to hear your thoughts on this as well!

    Thanks in advance,
    Varshan. :)

    • Varshan, assuming that you are already into your adulthood with an age of above 21 years and without any probability of growing more, though the chance of improvement is mainly dependent on your perseverance, I don’t think there is a risk of worsening.

  5. Hi Raj,

I have done lasik about 2 years back and again power has come back. Now it is -1.5 on both eyes and before lasik it was -7.5. Am thinking of going for 2nd sitting of laser.

As i heard this, can you help me on this. Will this yoga theraphy will bring down my power? Am 29 years old and work on computer always. By the way, are you eye doctor , working there?

    Thanks

    • No. Due to lack of time paying attention to studies, my son was unable to continue the exercises. As of now, his refraction is back to square one where we began with.

60 minutes back I was panicked when the doctor said my only 9 year old son is having myopia and started searching more about it and your article was a relief for me. Thank you very much Raj.

The last comment of yours above says that Rahul is back to square one. Sad to know that.

  6. Hey there,
Felt soo good to read abt your son but im sorry that hes back on square one..you should continue the exercises….my 5 year old daughter is -2.0 (left) and -1.5 (right) eye…can you pks recommend some basic exercises as she is less myopic than rahul…if i follow rahuls pattern would i still benefit

    Reply
    • I haven’t detailed the exercises here in full. So anything that you try to do would be ineffective. I would better recommend you to be there at the School with your daughter in vacation for 1 week and get personally trained; after all, the training is absolutely free.

However, since you are from Qatar, distance and convenience matters. Try searching for a Bates method practitioner in your country to try learn the exercises. Since she is less myopic, I believe she could get rid of the glasses if you pay proper attention and make her do the Bates eye exercises.

  7. And how long were each of the 14 sessions you took at the school?and may i know how long did they advice you to exercise daily at home?

    Reply
    • The training is totally for 7 days. Each day has two sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Each session is about one to one-and-a-half hours depending how patiently the child does the exercises.

Yes, the exercises have to be continued at home at least once a day until complete relief has been obtained.

Yes, the books have explicit explanation about the exercises. However, practical learning is different from learning through reading.

I read about one lady, Salima Pirani, who came all the way from Canada to the School at Pondicherry in 2007. Read her diary here.

Her Experience: She says her power has now reduced from -9.75 to -5. May be she can help you with virtual instructions as she is a Reiki and meditation instructor. I don’t know how much she charges but all these were information that I gathered before deciding to go to School.

      Reply
    • I think she can do without glasses indoors, at home, and with glasses outdoors and at her school.

A professional Bates practitioner or the books that I mentioned will guide you better in this aspect. As far as possible, they will encourage to remain without glasses.

As a disclaimer, I have limited knowledge on this subject. Hence verify the information to your satisfaction before arriving at a decision.

    • Oh, sad to hear that. There are a lot of factors that affect the end results, which include complete dedication and will power to stick to the regimen. Children lack that.

An interesting fact that I noticed while at the School is that there isn’t a qualified doctor to guide any of the patients. All the instructors seemed to be chiropractic than professionally qualified medical personnel.

  16. Hi Raj,

I am extremely pleased to read your post. Appreciate your patience to respond to each comment. Last week, I found out that my son has myopia of -1 in both eyes. He is 6 years old. I tried to book an appointment in Pondy for him but they said I need to wait till December. Also when I wrote back to them specifically asking for an appointment in December, I didn’t get any response. So I am worried that I would not have reached the right person. I wrote to this email ID: auroeyesight at yahoo.com. Is there another way to book an appointment? Do we need to wait for 6 months? It would be really helpful if you could tell me what’s the right way to take an appointment. I am not sure if they wanted my son to wait since he is only 6 years old. He doesn’t watch TV for long hours – an hour maximum in a day but he reads a lot of books and magazines. 6 months back when I took him for a regular eye-checkup, I was told that his vision was normal but I remember he could not read a few letters from the last row but now he is struggling from the third/fourth last. Can things worsen in 6 months? Nobody in the entire family has ever had vision problems. I had a -0.5 when I was 21 while preparing for my exams but it went off in 3 months’ time and I never needed glasses again. It is extremely painful to see my kid with glasses. Thanks a ton in advance!

    • Hi Dheepa,

Yes, you reached the right person, Ms.Santosh, over email. You can speak to her and book an appointment over phone too. Compulsorily, the minimum age requirement is 7 years. Get all information about this in my earlier post which contains all these details. Since your son is one year short of the requirement, they might have ignored your mail. So wait until he is 7 years.

Once he is 7 years, in the worst case even if you fail to get an appointment, you may walk in. For people from faraway places, they understand and respond positively at such times.

Yes, as far as I know, people become myopic when they read a lot, especially in the times of exams when you read a lot. (Think of doctors.) Once you are back to normal life with eye-friendly activities, it should retreat. That should have been the case with you too.

Regarding your son’s problem: Since he is reading a lot at this age and also if he is getting himself cramped inside dark rooms without outdoor games in the bright sunlight, he too might have acquired myopia. You have found it out at the right time. Allow him to play in the sunlight at least for two hours daily. I don’t know if that would be feasible in busy city life and with life in cramped apartments but extensive researches have proved that sunlight is a very good factor in prevention/progression of myopia. Retina needs light to be spread all over it to keep its cells live and vigor. Outdoor activities should very much help in this regard. My son was unable to read the last two rows on the Snellen chart even wearing his glasses last year. For the past one year, I allowed him to play at least two hours in the sunlight in the evening and believe me, when I took him to the eye checkup before the school opened, the power has decreased by 0.25, and he was able to read all the lines on the Snellen chart with his glasses.

Again check your son’s eyes before you go to Pondy at 7 years of age and practice the exercises that they advise you at Pondy. As far as I have seen, people with power of -1 have returned to normal if careful attention has been paid. Your son too should return back to normal if you take proper care. Good luck.

  17. Thanks a lot, it is really encouraging to read your detailed response. I will do my best to get him to play everyday for 2 hours in sunlight. There is a full fledged park within our apartment. That should not be a problem at all. Can he do the exercises in the meantime? Do you think he should wear glasses until I take him to Pondy. I know that you are not a qualified doctor but pls let me know whatever is your opinion. Thanks again. My sincere prayers are with Rahul.

    • The problem with anyone trying to practice Bates’ exercises daily is the lack of perseverance, especially when it is a kid. Either the kid will not concentrate on what you ask it to do or it will not have the patience of doing the exercise for at least half an hour and the kid may ultimately find it boring. Even Rahul did those exercises only under our heavy compulsion. So forget trying the exercises until you visit Pondy.

Regarding wearing glasses: You may discourage him wearing glasses except when he is at school although doctors may advise wearing glasses all the time except when sleeping. The doctors advise so because it would ensure that the light will be fully scattered on the retina with the help of glasses which would help keep the retinal cells alive. However, without glasses, we are ensuring that the retina gets its share of light by playing in the bright sunlight.

At school, he may have problems seeing the blackboard from a long distance. Otherwise he should do well without glasses with this minor degree of error. Think about Rahul; with his degree of refraction error, he was without glasses even at school until he passed out UKG, three years at school without glasses!

So it shouldn’t be a problem for your son at all to be without glasses at home. Thanks for your prayers for Rahul.

    • 1.) According to the Perfect Eyesight School, 7 years is a must for a child to understand the lessons and repeat them. So you cannot expect any relaxation in that as they are very strict about it.
2.) I haven’t yet come across any place where there is relaxation for age limit. May be you can inquire at places where they accept patients for a fee. These days many have started teaching Bates/Agarwal methods. Find if there is anyone at your place.

2.Have you come across or have any idea that by stopping the excercise/Practice (by observing Rahul eyesight) will not only put us back to square one but also further damge to eyesight problem, for ex. -1 to -2. Why i m asking this Q is that, somebody in below forum mentioned so, pls read 2 para or comments

    • Hi Babu,

1.) My son was born on June 18th. Hence I was seeking admission in the last week of May, as he would have been short of 7 years by then only by a few days. However, the School was lenient enough to admit him in April itself. Since your daughter too will be 6 years and 10 months by April 2014, I think it wouldn’t be a problem for you too if you are seeking admission during summer vacation in April/May 2014. Get a prior written appointment from Ms. Santosh through email stating clearly your daughter’s age.
2.) Rahul’s eye power is congenital. Children grow up to the age of 18 years or so, and their eyes too. So I thought at least I can be happy if I can halt further deterioration until he is 18. With and without eye exercises, so far that endeavor has been fruitful. In the case of my niece who was with a power of -1, who also visited the School during May 2012, who is now 22 years old, I have seen him becoming normal eyed after doing the exercises at Eyesight School and shedding his glasses. His eye power has not returned to -1 until now, even though he stopped doing the exercises soon after returning from School. So, yes, the exercises are effective for less powers and for patients who have just become adults, and it is NOT back to square one if you do not spoil your eyes again with the so called bad eye habits. However, if the patient is growing up, even if the eyes become normal after doing exercises, you should regularly watch the power with regular follow-up tests until s/he has become a grownup.

Except for their charity, personally I am not interested in the so called saints and their other deeds. I have a very wrong impression about them. Hence I am not interested and don’t know anything about the place that you mentioned in Kovai.

Hope it is clear. Wish you good luck in getting your daughter cured.

  20. Sir,
I have cleared my defence exams and when the medical tests were conducted , my eyesight was found to be 6/36.
I have been given a temporary rejection and 40 days to improve my eyesight.I am supposed to bring it down to 6/12.
I have booked dates for the ashram from 26th to 31st march. After 31st march, i will be left with 26days to practise these exercises.
Is there a possibility of improvement in this timespan.

    Thanks

    • I am stumped. A lot of factors including your age, state of mind, dedication, diet, number of hours of practice a day etc., could influence the outcome. So it is Santosh, the organizer at the School, would be the right person to answer this question. Ask her at the time of admission. Let’s hope for the best. Good Luck.

I did an eye test for him last week, and his cylindrical powers have remained the same.

Here is the chart of his latest eye powers:

      OS

SPH CYL AXIS V/A SPH CYL AXIS V/A
      DV -10.0 -0.50 180 6/6 -8.00 -0.50 180 6/6

He quit doing the eye exercises one month after we returned from the School. The power of his eyes before visiting the School has been listed here. The scores after visiting the School have been listed above in the content of this page.

    • To my knowledge, there is nothing you can do for the physical reduction of axial length. Lasik has got nothing to do with reducing axial length except that it peels away some layers of micrometers thick of cornea, so that the refraction is corrected.

Wearing glasses worsens his sqint. But doctors say only cure for this kind of squint is a surgery. For doing the surgery vision need to be 100 % in both eyes. His vision in left eye is 85%. e are patching him to correct the vision. Please suggest whether this training is ok with a kid of his age.

We really appreciate your detailed review and post. I am sure it will help a lot of children and parents.
We live abroad and will be in CBE in Feb. We are trying our best to visit Pondicherry. And we are rearranging our entire schedule. Unfortunately, in spite of our best efforts we may have to better plan it during our next visit to motherland. Given the situation, we really would like to start the exercises at the earliest. Are there any videos of the treatment, which will show the details and methods of the eye exercises?
    Thank you.

  29. Hi Raj,
Thank you for putting in the time and effort into the detailed review. Since The School for Perfect Eyesight do not do any promotion of their own, it is only through word of mouth efforts that the rest of us get to know about them. My parents have been devotees of Sri Aurobindo and Mother for more than 40 years and have visited Pondicherry many times, but none of us knew about the School!
In 2012, my elder son developed short sight and started using spectacles. At that time, I came across your blog post. In December 2014, my younger son also developed short sight and started using spectacles. This time, using the details in your post, we planned a visit to the School. In May this year, we went to The School for Perfect Eyesight and completed the one week course. Both the kids, aged 13 years and 7 years, showed remarkable improvement in vision.
More importantly, all of us realise the negative effect of overuse of TV and Mobile Phones on the eyes. Both the kids now spend lesser time watching TV or playing games on the Mobiles and Tabs.
Doing the eye exercises regularly at home is a struggle, but both kids manage to do the exercises once a day. We intend to do a followup visit after six months as recommended by the authorities at the School.

What has been the long term effect of this programme for Rahul?

    • His powers got reduced initially by 0.5 to 1 diopter as I said earlier and it remains there. He stopped doing the exercises as he found the repeated exercises to be boring.

I am glad that I could be of some help to you. Including your sons in my prayers.

Curious to know the eye powers of your sons before and after exercises. Good luck to you and your sons to shed the spectacles.

    • Kindly note that I do not have any professional qualification or any detailed experience in the subject. I too am a parent like you saddened to find one fine day with the son having very high spherical power in his eyes.

From my experience it is extremely difficult to practice a child of 2-1/2 years all the exercises that are advised at the Perfect Eyesight School. Moreover I do not know how effective these exercises would be in reducing cylindrical power.

Even if your child attains 7 years, keep it as an additional option of visiting the School of Perfect Eyesight rather than completely being dependent on it. In the mean time thoroughly stick to whatever your child’s ophthalmologist advises to.

My prayers are there with your daughter. Good luck.

    • Life would be a hell with decreased vision. Moreover, light need to fall on retina to prevent it from getting damaged; uncorrected myopic eyes wouldn’t get enough light exposure. Fortunately you identified the decreased vision before it’s late. So, better buy her the glass and ask her to wear it all the time before attending the School. Allow her to play in the daylight.

If eye power comes down after attending the school, change the lens accordingly retaining the frame.

I don’t know of any alternative contact number.

Is it compulsory that we need to practice all these exercises more often after the sessions also. Are there any chances of affecting eye sight again in the future if we are not performing exercises. Are there any instructions given to your son by the doctor.

    Reply
      1. You can practice the exercises even after the sessions also but there is no compulsion. It is up to your discretion. If your eyesight has become normal or otherwise, you can leave the exercises.
      2. A boy can grow until age 21 and the eyeball as well. So chances are there that the eyeball size gets altered until then. I don’t think eye exercises can stop the eyeball growth. Or even significantly alter the shape of the eyeball for that matter. So in short, the physique vary from person to person and what you can do is to try your luck.
      3. To my knowledge, they are not doctors at the School but chiropractors. No specific instructions were given except that they encouraged to continue the exercises and to adopt good eye practices.

    • Status quo. His power has neither increased nor decreased from that I have mentioned here.

His powers are congenital and have almost remained stable right from the first eye test, except when he did eye exercises attending The School for Perfect Eyesight, where it came below by 1.5 and 0.75 diopters respectively. So it was 11 and 8.5 earlier, came down to 9.5 and 7.75 after exercises, and stabilized at 10 and 8 after he quit exercises and has remained there now for more than 5 years.

He is 8 years old now and doctors haven’t been able to find any reason for this vision loss. We plan to take him to School of Perfect eyesight, hoping it will help. I wrote to them and while taking an appointment, their mail had mentioned that they take patients till the age of 25. Whereas, your blog says 40. Your Brother also had visited. Can u clear this confusion as my brother aged 28 also wishes to join me

    • Back then in 2012, the age limit was 40. I don’t know if they have brought it down now. And you have their official communication with you stating their current limits. Since being skeptic, why not confirm with the source itself rather than asking me? I am not their spokesperson but just a beneficiary of their charity.

  58. Hello Raj,

Whether it can be cured that is without glasses, Lens or LASIK Ops I will be OK. I have this problem 5 Years which it starts from L 0.2 R 0.2.
I Very rarely weared Glasses. whether it can be cured within the week, That it’s In 14 sessions in a week at the School.

  60. Hi ..My son is 6.7 yrs old .Dr recently idetendified anisometropia with left eye -10.50× 0.50×90 and right -1×0.50×90 ..with left eye he can see 20/60 initially it was 20/200 becoz of the significant difference between eyes.we have been told to patch his right eye daily 2 hrs sothat he can forcefully see thru left eye. We are in usa now.the dr days we can patch his eyes until 8 yrs.hopefully he can get normal by tht time.My questions are
    1. Whether patching corrects the refractive errors ?
2.we are thinking abt to go to pondi.pls give ur suggestion.

Can you please advise how your son, Rahul’s eyesight is currently ?
Is there nay latest update on his eyesight after your post dated May 27,2014 ?
Any specific reason on why he is not continuing the exercises ?

  62. Hello Raj,
Even I am interested to know his results now. I was very glad to read your blog. I am wearing glasses for the past 30 years and was thinking of visiting the school for eye treatment. So any information on his recent power will be helpful in making a decision.
If there is a cure even to some extent, then its worth spending time in taking the treatment. But if we have to come back to square 1, then there is no point in going for this eye treatment. every one is leading a busy life, whether you are a student or a working professional, and one has to work on the computer every day. can we expect to see results if we continue the treatment even after doing our regular work at office seeing computer, mobile screen?

    Thanks!

    • We attended the class for one week in mid April 2012, and Rahul’s eye power dropped down by 1 diopter in each eye. He continued to do the eye exercises throughout May until June. However, the power didn’t come down further, and he got frustrated. Furthermore he became busy with his studies. So he stopped doing the exercises after one-and-a-half month or so. Thus to be frank, he got a 1-diopter reduction just for attending the class for one week.

However, his power stabilized at that 1-diopter reduction and has remained so until now, after full seven years. He watches TV during summer holidays (perhaps a whole day on some days) and works on computer throughout the academic year as every other kid.

So if you are below 40 years of age, you could give a try if you have one-week time at your disposal.

  63. Hi Raj,
Thank you for the amazing post. It is almost 10 years now since the post was written. Just checking on how the exercises have worked over a decade. My daughter is 6 and has -4 and -4.5 now. Doctors have recommended atropine drops but wanted to check with you to see how the myopia has progressed with your son.

    • He got his power reduced by around 1 diopter initially and he stopped doing the eye exercises after about a month and a half or so. However, the power has stabilized since then in both the eyes; neither increased nor decreased after the initial decrease of around 1 diopter.
